Hitachi 18V Body Only Cordless Combi Drill UK Review

Thanks for taking the time to read our review on the Hitachi 18V body only cordless drill. This particular model DV18DSDL/L4 is part of the Hitachi cordless drill/drivers range. At a price of around £110-120 , this is not a cheap option, and it gets a disappointing buyer satisfaction rating of only 66%, based on the available online buyer reviews.

Please note that this cordless drill is a body only drill. That means that no battery is supplied so you will have to purchase that as a separate item, unless you already own an 18 volt Hitachi battery, that you use with another Hitachi tool.

Many of the leading brands do this type of product. The principle is that if you buy one battery, you can use it with a number of their tools. This is of course to get you to buy more of their tools which will then be at a slightly cheaper price as you will already own the battery.

We have completed a full review below. However if you are pushed for time you can click below for availability and reviews over at Amazon

Who Would Buy the Hitachi DV18DSDL/L4?

This would be bought by anyone who needs a powerful enough drill to be able to do the normal to difficult tasks around the home. This is a very powerful drill that can handle just about any job that you decide to do with it.

The other people who would find this to be a good buy would of course be anyone who is a fan of the Hitachi brand and already own a tool that uses an 18 volt Hitachi battery.

If you do decide to go with this product and don't own the battery, then you will need to buy one. It will need to be an 18 volt Lithium-Ion battery that slides on. The code for this battery is BSL1830 and that will cost around £20 depending on where you make your purchase..

The buyer rating are disappointing though according to the reviews left by people who have actually bought and used this product.

For sure you can buy cheaper drills. This model is at the higher end of the price point for a typical cordless drill. Generally speaking Hitachi drills are not cheap but they are very well made and built to last.

Features Worth A Mention

High Specification Model

We do understand why many of the leading brands like Hitachi do these tool only models. Dewalt also do them as do Bosch and Ryobi. Batteries cost money and Li-Ion batteries are expensive.

If they can sell tools without the battery then they will of course be cheaper. For the brand though it is simply about getting you to buy more of their tools and as such gain your loyalty.

For you the consumer, if you do like a brand, then this is the best way to buy as you just need one battery and can then share that with any tool that you need.

The tools are then cheaper than having to buy a battery every single time. The consumers who lose out are those who just want to buy a single tool like a drill.

However let's have a look at the features on this one. It has the forward normal drilling rotation. It also has a reverse function which is good for getting a drill bit out of a wall if it gets stuck, but particularly useful for removing screws.

It also has a great LED light for lighting up poorly lit work areas. The drill has a metal chuck and that makes a great difference in terms of gripping the bits and also for wear and tear.

DV18DSDL-L4 18V COMBI DRILL

Main Review of the DV18DSDL-L4 18V Drill

As we have mentioned the buyer ratings are disappointing. This drill can handle many tasks around the home as it has a high torque setting. It can handle brick up to 16 mm, wood up to 65 mm and metal up to 13 mm.

If you decide to buy this one then make sure to register the product online as that will then give you a 3-year warranty which is excellent.

We have not used this drill/driver myself so can not offer a personal opinion on this one. Buyers clearly are divided in opinion about this one. We also know that this brand do make very good quality tools and the warranty is assuring.

If you are a fan of the brand then this would be a good choice and you would own a good quality product.

Personally we think there are many other drill/drivers that offer better value for money. There is no question about the quality of this model but for me there are other drills in the UK market, with more features at a lower price.

What Buyers Liked About the 18V Lithium Ion Drill/Driver

Hitachi - The Company and Brand

Hitachi came to the UK in 1981 and made an instant hit with many of their products. They pride their company on making very well designed and reliable tools fully backed up by an excellent customer service.

Their main goal is to make sure that should you buy any of their tools you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

Our Conclusion & Recommendation

This is their best in range and buyers support this by giving it the highest rated in the entire Hitachi range. If you need a high quality drill/driver for all purpose use around the home and garden, then this is about as good as it gets.

  1. Very interesting reviews and comments – thank you.

Can you advise about batteries? We have a number of 18V batteries Code BSL1815 dating from 2013. If we buy a couple of Hitachi DV18DSDL-L4 Bodies only will the old batteries be compatible.

    Thanks

    Phillip.

    1. Hi Philip, I know originally these were supplied with a 4 Amp Li-ion battery, but are now supplied with a 5 Amp. The 3.Ah would still work but you would lose a lot of power. Would be worth ringing Hitachi to double check
