Cordless Hammer Drill Buying Guide

Hopefully you will find this guide useful. Above I have made my top 5 recommendations for a cordless hammer drill. However, if you would like to know more detail about what to look out for, before making a purchase, then this buyer's guide should help.

The Actual Hammer Action

Now it goes without saying that the very first thing you need to check, is that it has the hammer action. That will always be listed in the features, as that is the only function, that will allow you to get through concrete and masonry.

This is normally measured in bumps per second (bps) The more bumps the better, is the easiest thing to look out for. Ordinary drill have a rotary spinning action. This is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). Most drills will then have variable speeds. These different speeds are used to drill through different types of material.

Hammer drills also have this revolving or spinning function. When the hammer function is engaged, then as well as a rotary drilling action, it also has a bumping action like a very fast hammer. It is the combination of both actions, that allows you to drill through walls and masonry.

Battery Power for Hammer Action Drills

As long as you have a hammer feature, then the next most important feature to check is battery size and battery charge. The most popular is an 18 Volt sized battery. Lithium-Ion batteries are much better than the older NiCad batteries, but are more expensive. Li-Ion batteries also tend to charge faster, and they certainly retain or hold their charge for much longer.

The power for your drilling comes directly from the battery. The bigger it is the better. The smallest you should go for is the 14.4 Volt option, but an 18 Volt or 20 Volt is even better.

Chuck Size for a Hammer Drill

Most of these types of cordless hammer drills will have a 10 mm chuck. That means you can insert a drill bit, that has a diameter of 10 mm. For most masonry drilling that is usually enough. It is ideal for drilling out holes for wall plugs etc. You can also get 12 mm chucks and these will allow you to hold larger diameter drill bits.

You will really only need to move up to that, if you plan on doing a lot of heavy duty drilling. The 10 mm chuck size is usually good enough for almost all jobs around the home and garden.
