Apollo 18V Pro Combo Cordless Drill Review

This 18 volt cordless drill from the Apollo brand is all about great value for money. Not only do you get a powerful drill, but it comes with a 30 piece screwdriver and drill bit set. All of this is neatly contained in a compact storage case. At under £30, this looks like decent value for money.

Let's find out more...

Who Would Buy the Apollo 18V Drill?

This is for someone who does a bit of drilling or driving from time to time. It is not one for the serious DIY person. I don't mean that in any bad way at all. If you simply need to have a drill around the home, with  a few screwdriver bits, and a few basic drill bits, then this will do nicely.

Without a hammer function, it will not drill into concrete, brick or mortar. There would be more than enough power though to go through plasterboard style walls. You will also be able to drill through wood, plastic and most metals.

So if you have a few small jobs that need done from time to time, this Apollo will do those. At the price you get plenty for your money, and is one of the lowest priced cordless drills, on the UK market.

Key Features of the Apollo 18V

This drill, despite the lower price, does not lack in features. It has more than enough to satisfy getting the basics done, and more.

It is suitable for both men and women, as it is light and compact. It measures 27 x 22.2 x 12.6 cm (10.6" x 8.7" x 5")and weighs around 2.7Kg (6 lbs) It also comes with a really useful LED light, that helps light up the work area.

It comes with a 24 month guarantee.

Battery Information

This uses an 18 volt Ni-Cd battery that does come with the drill. That means you do not need to buy a battery. It is the older style battery, which has been replaced with the much better Li-Ion ones. That said, this one holds its charge pretty well. Just be aware that with any Ni-Cd battery, it will discharge in 2-3 days. If you need to use your drill, it will then need recharged.

It is slow to charge and takes around 5 hours. So if you plan on using this one, then charge it the night before. For infrequent users, this should not be a problem. For those of us who use a drill regularly, that would be a huge minus. Still, buyers seem to be happy enough with this, as they are not heavy drill users.

Torque and Performance

There are 17 torque settings on this model. Those are used to allow you to drill into a range of materials. For a drill at this price, that is a decent torque range. It is certainly enough to allow you to be able to drill into wood, and thinner sheet style metal. It is also powerful enough to allow you to drive in screws and also to remove them. That is because this drill has both forward and reverse drilling and driving.

The Chuck

This Apollo has a 10 mm keyless chuck. You simply pop your bit in and tighten by hand. It can take drill and screwdriver bits up to 10 mm in diameter. Just be aware that if you already own some bits, they may be designed for the bigger 12 mm chucks.

This one is typical for drills of this size though. Most buyers seemed happy enough that there was no chuck slipping, when the drill came under pressure.

The Accessories

One great feature of this drill is that it does come with some useful accessories. So instead of having to go out and buy individual screwdriver bits, and drill bits, you get those in nice set. these cover all the important basic sizes.

High Speed Steel Metric Drill Bits: There are 9 of these in the following sizes 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.2, 3.5, 4, 5, 6 mm. These are made for drilling in steel, and should only be used for those to keep them sharp.

Masonry Metric Drill Bits: You get 4 of these 4, 5, 6, 8 mm for drilling in bricks and mortar. Just be aware that even though this drill does not have a hammer action, it can still drill through these materials. It will just take a great deal longer, and you will need to be patient. It would have been ideal to have got a 10 mm bit, but sadly there isn't one in this kit.

Brad Point Wood Drill Bits: These will probably get the most use. You get 4 of them in sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 mm These should only ever be used for drilling through wood. if you use them on any other material, they will blunt very quickly.

25mm CRV Screwdriver Bits: This is a nice range of 10 screwdriving bits. They come in the following sizes 4-pc Slotted 1/8", 5/32, 3/16, 1/46-pc Phillips: PH1, PH2, PH3, PZ1, PZ2, PZ3

You also get a magnetic 50mm Bit Connector to securely hold screwdriver bits, along with a counter sink bit, that allows you to make your screws flush.

Summary of the Apollo Pro Combo Drill

There is no doubt in my mind that this compact drill is VERY good value for money. For a household, that will need the odd job doing, this would be a great value for money buy.

It is powerful enough to be able to take on the basic drilling and driving jobs around the home. You also get a nice range of accessories with your purchase, and a solid enough guarantee.

It is not for someone who will be doing a lot of DIY, or heavier drilling work. This is perfect for someone who knows they need some type of cordless drill/driver, but doesn't want to spend a fortune.
